UK Rape Convictions Under Review Following Detective's AI Use for Evidence

Several rape convictions in the United Kingdom are under review after a Derbyshire Police detective was suspended for allegedly using an artificial intelligence chatbot to manipulate evidence.

The officer was removed from frontline duties and is now the subject of a criminal investigation, according to the Financial Times.

He is accused of inputting biased prompts into AI software to slant case paperwork toward outcomes desired by the police.

The alleged misconduct primarily affects a series of rape cases the officer handled immediately before the investigation began.

The probe represents the first known incident of its kind in the British justice system.

Manipulating Legal Outcomes

People familiar with the events indicated the officer used the AI system to prepare victim impact statements.

He allegedly instructed the software to maximize the impact of the victims' accounts to influence judicial sentencing.

The detective also reportedly utilized the AI to draft briefings for prosecutors.

He is accused of directing the system to ensure the briefings would lead to authorized charges.

"He’s used good-sounding words to make sure he gets the result (the suspect) probably deserves," a person familiar with the matter stated.

Criminal Investigation Launched

Derbyshire Police is investigating the officer for potentially perverting the course of justice. No arrests have been made, and charges have not been filed.

The Crown Prosecution Service is currently engaging with defense attorneys and the courts regarding the affected cases.

Authorities have declined to specify the total number of compromised convictions.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct was notified of the alleged misuse in late January.

The watchdog elected to allow Derbyshire Police to conduct the primary investigation.

Systemic AI Concerns

The incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities regarding AI hallucinations in the criminal justice system. However, no evidence currently suggests such hallucinations occurred in the Derbyshire cases.

A separate incident involving AI recently contributed to the retirement of West Midlands Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford.

His force utilized Microsoft Copilot to compile a security dossier on fans of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv attending a match in Birmingham.

The software-generated fabricated information introduced a completely imaginary past match between Maccabi and West Ham into the official document.

National AI Pause

In response to emerging technological challenges, the National Police Chiefs’ Council recently launched PoliceAI.

The dedicated team will oversee the deployment of AI across police forces in England and Wales.

PoliceAI head Alex Murray has instructed multiple forces to pause their use of the technology for court documents, including witness statements.

The pause will remain in place pending further reviews to ensure responsible use.

Derbyshire Police confirmed it has shared initial details of the criminal probe with PoliceAI.

The force stated that any subsequent learnings will be forwarded to the national body upon the investigation's conclusion.
