U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky held a critical meeting at the White House on Friday. Sources familiar with the meeting, as reported by the Financial Times, said the discussion often descended into shouting matches, with Trump repeatedly swearing.
Trump’s Pressure Tactics
According to sources close to the meeting, Trump urged Zelensky to cede the Donbas region to Russia. A European official noted that Trump almost verbatim relayed to Zelensky what Putin had told him: “If you don’t make a deal, he will destroy you.”
Zelensky had come to the meeting requesting Tomahawk cruise missiles from the U.S., but Trump denied the request. This stance caused significant disappointment among Ukraine supporters in Washington.
Tension and Chaos at the Meeting
According to the Financial Times, the meeting frequently devolved into shouting. Trump reportedly threw maps across the table, spoke loudly, and swore repeatedly. He also stated that the Russian economy is “doing very well,” contradicting his previous remarks and indicating a softer stance toward Moscow.
Putin’s New Proposal and Kyiv’s Reaction
The Kremlin offered a new proposal to Trump: Russia would take full control of Donbas in exchange for leaving small parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia under Ukrainian control. However, Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, stated, “Handing over Donbas without a fight is impossible; Putin’s goal is not land, it is to divide us from within.”
Pessimism in Europe and Kyiv
European sources said the meeting left Zelensky deeply disappointed, with cold, pragmatic planning replacing hope. Trump’s repetition of Putin’s demands also raised concerns among allies in Europe.
Trump-Putin Summit Planned
Trump announced that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary. He did not provide a specific date but suggested the meeting would take place “within two weeks.”
