Spy Agencies Say AI Cyber Threats Will Outpace Defense Capabilities in Months

Advanced artificial intelligence models are advancing at a pace that could render current cybersecurity protocols obsolete within months, according to a warning from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

The security agencies of the U.S., Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand issued a joint advisory on Monday.

They urged governments and businesses to act immediately to prepare for evolving digital threats.

"The rapid pace of frontier AI development means cyber risk assumptions can become outdated in months, not years," the alliance stated.

The advisory noted that artificial intelligence lowers the barrier to entry for malicious actors.

It simultaneously increases both the speed and the complexity of cyberattacks.

Preparing for Breaches

The intelligence coalition warned that cyber breaches are inevitable under these accelerated conditions.

"Preparedness helps you contain them quickly and prevent escalation into major operational and financial crises," the statement read.

To bolster cyber defenses, organizations are advised to integrate their own AI tools into security operations.

Additional recommendations include updating legacy infrastructure and restricting access to critical systems.

The intelligence warning coincides with heightened scrutiny over AI-enhanced hacking capabilities following recent developments in the U.S. tech sector.

US Government Intervention

In April, U.S. startup Anthropic announced that its cutting-edge Mythos models demonstrated new capabilities for identifying software vulnerabilities.

This month, Anthropic suspended access to Mythos 5 and a restricted variant called Fable 5.

The suspension was executed to comply with a U.S. national security order.

Days after the public launch of Fable 5, Anthropic received a government directive banning all foreign nationals from accessing the two models.

The intervention by the White House contrasts with its recent broader policy trajectory.

The administration has generally pushed to loosen oversight of artificial intelligence, including steps to block states from writing their own regulations.
