Somali FM Calls For Stronger OIC Backing At Doha Meeting
Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali urged increased OIC support during a high-level meeting in Doha, focusing on security, development, and humanitarian coordination.

Foreign Minister Ali noted that Somalia had made tangible progress in its security sector, citing the successful transfer of 23 foreign military bases to Somali control and the recruitment and training of 20,000 new national forces. He stated that the Somali government remains committed to completing the security transition but requires additional support in equipment, logistics, and intelligence tools—particularly in countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The Minister reaffirmed Somalia’s continued collaboration with international partners and emphasized that strengthening the Somali National Army and associated institutions is central to sustaining peace and defending gains made against insurgent threats.
Economic Reform, Development Vision, And Political Milestones
Highlighting Somalia’s economic progress, Minister Ali referenced the positive momentum following debt relief, which has led to rising foreign investment and growth opportunities in key sectors such as infrastructure and energy. He called for coordinated investment aligned with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (2025–2035) and long-term Vision 2060 agenda.
On governance, the Minister acknowledged advancements in federalization, constitutional review, and preparations for the upcoming 2026 general elections. He stressed the importance of inclusive development, noting efforts to enhance education, healthcare, and empower women and youth across Somalia’s federal member states.
The Minister welcomed the OIC’s new humanitarian financing tools, especially the Special Fund for Somalia’s development, and proposed the creation of a dedicated Contact Group monitoring committee to improve coordination, accountability, and project delivery.
In closing, he expressed Somalia’s gratitude to Qatar and other OIC nations for their longstanding support, reiterating the federal government’s determination to become a peaceful, self-reliant, and stable partner in the region.
