Satellite images show North Korea has completed a new pier at its Sohae Satellite Launching Station, enabling the transport of larger rocket components and enhancing the site’s role in future rocket and satellite launches. The move signals Pyongyang’s commitment to expanding its military space capabilities despite international concerns.
According to ICEYE, a satellite operator, the new maritime pier at Sohae facilitates the movement of larger rocket parts that cannot be transported by rail, potentially enabling the launch of rockets with greater range. An image from July 9 shows a completed jetty and vessels docked, suggesting the facility is operational.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had previously ordered modernization and expansion of the Sohae site to accommodate a broader range of rockets, including those capable of carrying military satellites. The facility has been used for satellite launches and testing components common to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
Construction of the pier took about 28 months, with further infrastructure upgrades ongoing, including expanded road and rail links, according to 38 North, a US-based North Korea monitoring group.
South Korean officials believe North Korea is receiving technical assistance from Russia on its satellite program in exchange for military support to Moscow’s war in Ukraine. North Korea successfully launched its first spy satellite in November 2023 but failed in its latest attempt this past May.
Kim remains committed to advancing North Korea’s space reconnaissance capabilities, framing them as vital for national defense.
