Following the major heist that shook France on October 19, police operations have intensified. According to Le Parisien, two suspects linked to the robbery were apprehended on Saturday evening. One of them was detained at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport as he prepared to board a flight to Algeria.
Official Statements and Investigation Details
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that two suspects are in custody but declined to comment on whether any of the stolen jewels have been found. Beccuau added that forensic teams analyzed 150 samples collected from the crime scene. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the suspects—two men in their 30s known to the authorities—were identified partly through DNA evidence.
The Eight-Minute Heist Plan
The theft took place in less than eight minutes early Sunday morning. Investigators believe the thieves used a basket lift to scale the Louvre’s façade, forced open a window, smashed display cases, and escaped with royal jewels worth an estimated 88 million euros (102 million dollars). The museum’s director later described the incident as “a shocking security failure.”
Investigation Widens
French police have launched a large-scale manhunt as the probe continues to expand. Investigators are also examining potential international connections. Authorities confirmed that interrogations of the two suspects are ongoing, and additional arrests may follow.
