The leaks suggest that Netanyahu used the term “occupation of the Strip” explicitly in conversations with cabinet members. According to Ynet, Israeli forces would re-enter areas such as central refugee camps and western Gaza City. The security establishment, including senior defense officials, reportedly voiced strong reservations about the move, citing the danger it poses to captives and the increasing physical and mental fatigue among troops.

Netanyahu’s reported insistence on expanding the assault comes after a supposed “green light” from U.S. President Donald Trump. However, the timing has raised questions, particularly as ceasefire and prisoner exchange negotiations with Hamas had reportedly made progress before both Israel and the U.S. suddenly withdrew from talks. Leaks of this nature—attributed to sources close to the Prime Minister—are often interpreted in Israeli media as originating directly from Netanyahu himself.

The reports coincide with a stalled military campaign that has, according to health authorities in Gaza, resulted in the deaths of more than 60,000 Palestinians—including at least 18,000 children—since the war began 22 months ago. Human rights groups and international observers have accused Israel of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, and using starvation as a weapon of war.

The leaks also highlight internal divisions within the Israeli leadership. According to Israeli media, if army chief Eyal Zamir does not agree to implement the full occupation plan, Netanyahu’s allies believe he should resign. Meanwhile, public broadcaster Kan 11 reported that Netanyahu is expected to convene a high-level security meeting on Tuesday to finalize decisions regarding the expansion.
