Armed militants killed nine soldiers, one police officer and one civilian in Kebbi state’s Shanga area late Tuesday, according to state officials. The attack targeted forces responding to warnings of an impending assault in the village of Giron Masa.
Several soldiers were also injured, with images released by authorities showing burned vehicles along forested roads.
Governor Nasir Idris described the incident as a major loss, stating: “Those that lost their lives, the government… will do everything to assist the families.”
The attack reflects a pattern in which militants are exploiting porous borders and limited state presence to intensify operations. Such tactics have become more frequent in areas with limited infrastructure and surveillance coverage.
While no group claimed responsibility, residents alluded to Daesh affiliated militants operating in Kebbi and neighboring Sokoto, particularly along the border with Niger.
The attack forms part of a broader cycle of violence affecting northern Nigeria, where armed groups regularly target both civilians and security personnel.
Despite ongoing military interventions by the nigerian government and the U.S. militant groups continue to operate across loosely governed border zones.
The northwest has also seen increasing attacks by criminal networks involved in kidnapping and smuggling.
