German investigators examining a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport have recovered a suspicious antenna and multiple DNA traces, providing critical forensic leads in a suspected sabotage operation.

The recovered evidence points to a sophisticated attempt to destroy Ukrainian cargo aircraft using a modified unmanned aerial vehicle, according to Tagesschau.

Signal Enhancement Strategy

Security authorities discovered a small antenna affixed to a tree near the airport perimeter last week.

Investigators assess that the device functioned as a signal amplifier designed to ensure an uninterrupted communication link with the explosive-laden drone.

Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) officials believe the operators controlled the aircraft via a mobile network.

The drone itself was heavily modified for the operation. It featured an auxiliary battery for extended flight time, an integrated camera, a 5G router, and two internal SIM cards.

The aircraft operated without standard position lights to evade visual detection during its approach.

This technical configuration theoretically allowed the saboteurs to pilot the drone from anywhere in the world.

The external antenna installation indicates a specific effort to maintain a strong transmission signal during the final attack sequence.

Botched Strike and Explosive Payload

The attack occurred on August 4, when the drone targeted parked Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes.

Surveillance footage analysis indicates the unmanned aircraft struck the fuel-laden wing of one aircraft at approximately 19:30 local time.

The payload failed to detonate upon impact. The drone bounced off the wing, landed inverted on the tarmac, and was rendered inoperable. Airport personnel discovered the wreckage several hours later.

Authorities located an improvised explosive device several meters from the drone chassis.

The payload consisted of a tin can packed with roughly 600 grams of Semtex high explosive.

A defective detonator prevented a catastrophic blast after the container detached during the initial collision.

Forensic Trace Analysis

The failed detonation preserved substantial forensic evidence for investigators.

Technical experts recovered DNA material directly from the explosive-filled container. Authorities identified additional DNA traces of varying quality on the drone and throughout the immediate crime scene.

Forensic analysis has already generated a trace-to-trace match linking the current evidence to an undisclosed separate case.

Another specific DNA profile points toward a direct connection in Lithuania.

Security circles are currently evaluating parallels between this incident and previous regional sabotage operations.

Investigators have explicitly ruled out a direct link to a recent plot involving DHL air freight.

Regional Intelligence Context

The geographical links align with established patterns of European sabotage.

Two years ago, authorities dismantled a network of disposable agents operating across Lithuania, Poland, and Germany under the direction of Russian military intelligence (GRU).

That previous network successfully deployed incendiary devices via air freight, causing fires in Leipzig, Birmingham, and Warsaw.

Several individuals connected to those operations are currently facing trial in Polish and Lithuanian courts.

During the investigation into the GRU-directed network, European authorities tracked a recruited Ukrainian operative operating inside Germany.

His assigned tasks included procuring hardware suitable for drone-based explosive attacks, specifically collecting drone components, specialized mounts, and tin cans.
