Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Tuesday for a normalization of bilateral relations with the United States following an escalating public dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Meloni emphasized that the deep-seated strategic cooperation between Rome and Washington remains resilient against social media arguments.
“I Was Genuinely Surprised”
The Italian premier stated that she was being sincere in her surprise when reacting to Trump’s comments that ignited the row between the two leaders.
“I was genuinely surprised, and when I said I was surprised, I was being completely sincere,” she said.
Meloni reiterated her desire to move on from the dispute and normalize ties between the two nations.
“I've already said, and I repeat, that I do not intend to keep fueling this dispute,” she stated. “I believe our bilateral relationship with the United States should return to normal.”
“Foreign Policy is More Complex Than Internet Memes”
The Italian leader stated that relations with the U.S. are built on a long and solid history of cooperation that cannot be redefined by online arguments or specific individuals governing either nation.
She rejected assertions that Rome would alter its geopolitical trajectory, affirming that Italy will maintain the same foreign policy it has pursued for the last 80 years to keep the transatlantic relationship strong.
She urged a return to professional diplomatic depth, criticizing the casual nature of contemporary foreign policy discourse influenced by internet memes.
“We need to bring foreign policy back to the depth that foreign policy requires, because sometimes we really discuss it as if it were a season of Temptation Island,” she said.
“Focus on Your Own Popularity”
Trump had initially told Italian broadcaster La7 that Meloni “begged” him for a picture at this week's G7 summit in France, saying he agreed only because he “felt sorry for her.”
Meloni angrily denied the claim, calling it "made up," but Trump doubled down in a post on Truth Social, saying Meloni had asked "over and over" for a photograph during the summit.
Trump also said that Meloni was trying to mend ties to boost her struggling domestic approval ratings after previously denying the U.S. access to Italian airstrips during a conflict with Iran.
He reiterated his complaints about the cost of defending NATO allies like Italy.
In a fiery Instagram response, Meloni called his attacks senseless and said her popularity did not depend on her relationship with the U.S. president.
“Being your friend certainly has not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you,” she wrote.
“In any case, my popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours,” she added.
Divergences on Iran Fueled Tensions
The public dispute intensified after Trump accused Meloni of failing to support American efforts to block Iran’s nuclear weapon program and criticized her domestic popularity levels.
Trump also claimed the Italian administration caused logistical inconveniences by prohibiting the U.S. from using Italian air facilities for military operations in Iran this year.
Meloni countered that the use of Italian airbases is governed by strict international agreements that her government has consistently respected.
Despite the bilateral friction, the prime minister reinforced Rome's stance against Iranian nuclear proliferation, declaring that the international community cannot allow the Iranian regime to acquire nuclear warheads given its existing long-range missile capabilities.
It Started With the Pope
The friction follows earlier disagreements this year, when Meloni defended Pope Leo XIV against public criticism from the U.S. president.
Meloni noted that the geopolitical implications of the dispute have expanded beyond Italy, involving other nations.
She concluded by reiterating the necessity of securing strategic trade routes, warning that allowing Iran to impose restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz would dangerously weaponize global commerce.
