The White House initially halted planned weapons deliveries last week due to concerns over dwindling U.S. missile stockpiles. After reviewing supply levels and speaking directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump authorized the shipment of 10 Patriot interceptors—fewer than previously expected.
“We are going to have to send more weapons to Ukraine. Defensive weapons—they have to defend themselves,” Trump said during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Pentagon later confirmed the decision, emphasizing it was in line with the goal of ensuring Ukraine's self-defense during continued negotiations for a long-term peace deal.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Trump in a call to unfreeze the weapons shipment. In response, Trump proposed that Germany sell one of its own Patriot batteries to Ukraine, with the cost potentially shared by NATO allies.
While no deal has yet been reached, negotiations remain ongoing. German officials noted that Germany has already donated a larger percentage of its Patriot systems than the U.S., raising concerns over Europe’s remaining air defense capacity amid broader NATO commitments.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said existing systems in Germany and Greece could be redirected to Ukraine if financing and logistics are resolved.
Trump’s decision reflects broader tensions in the West about balancing military aid with national readiness. “Getting a Patriot missile isn’t like going to Walmart and picking 10 off the shelf,” a Trump advisor told Axios, underscoring concerns over production lag.
Trump has privately expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin following a major Russian airstrike campaign, which came shortly after a phone call between the two leaders. By contrast, Trump’s recent call with Zelensky and a prior meeting in The Hague were described as “the most productive” of his presidency.
