June 07, 2025Clash Report
Tensions are rising between Thailand and Cambodia after a deadly border clash on May 28, prompting both countries to reinforce troops along disputed areas despite ASEAN and Chinese calls for de-escalation.
Thailand’s Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed on June 7 that Thai forces are reinforcing their positions along the 817 km disputed border following Cambodia’s refusal to accept de-escalation proposals during bilateral talks.
“The Royal Thai Government has deemed it necessary to implement additional measures and reinforce our military posture accordingly,” Phumtham said, accusing Cambodia of exacerbating the situation.
The Thai army stated that Cambodian soldiers and civilians had repeatedly crossed into Thai territory, interpreting it as a sign of “clear intent to use force.” The army announced it had taken control of all Thai checkpoints along the border to ensure security.
The Cambodian government has not responded to the latest Thai claims, but earlier reports confirm the death of one Cambodian soldier during the May 28 incident.
The troop movements are taking place despite diplomatic efforts from ASEAN chair Malaysia and China to defuse the standoff. Historical tensions between the two neighbors date back over a century, with past skirmishes notably erupting around the 11th-century Preah Vihear temple area.
Cambodia has stated it will refer four disputed border areas to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and urged Thailand to cooperate—a move Thailand rejected, insisting on bilateral talks instead.
