Israel carried out an unprecedented attack on Qatari territory, striking a building in Doha that housed senior Hamas leaders engaged in ceasefire negotiations. The assault, described by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “settling of accounts,” has drawn harsh condemnation across the region and beyond, with many warning it represents a dangerous escalation and a direct assault on diplomacy.
The Israeli Air Force, supported by intelligence services, struck a building in Doha where senior Hamas officials were meeting to discuss a ceasefire proposal. Figures targeted included Khaled Mashal, Mousa Abu Marzouk, and Khalil al-Hayya. Conflicting reports emerged, with Israeli outlets claiming al-Hayya was killed, while Hamas insisted its delegation survived, noting that his office director and son were among the casualties.
The U.S. Embassy in Doha confirmed explosions and ordered American citizens to shelter-in-place before lifting the warning. Washington acknowledged Israel had briefed it shortly before the attack but denied advance approval.
Qatar firmly rejected suggestions it was informed in advance, stating the call from U.S. officials came only once explosions had already begun. Doha suspended all mediation efforts, accusing Israel of deliberately sabotaging peace talks.
The strike provoked swift regional backlash. Türkiye denounced Israel for using “terrorism as state policy,” while Egypt described the assault as “strongly condemned.” Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged “readiness to deploy all capabilities” in support of Qatar, and the UAE called the action “treacherous.” French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes were “unacceptable regardless of the reason.”
Despite the widespread condemnation, Netanyahu praised the operation, declaring: “We struck the Hamas leaders today at the place where they celebrated October 7. The days are over when terror leaders could enjoy immunity anywhere.” His remarks reinforced perceptions that Israel is escalating militarily rather than pursuing peace.
By striking in Doha, Israel has directly jeopardized mediation channels, with Qatar suspending its role in ceasefire talks. The attack highlights the fragility of diplomatic efforts and raises questions about Israel’s willingness to engage in negotiations. Even U.S. officials admitted that the strike undermined attempts to broker peace, leaving the future of talks deeply uncertain.
