USS Gerald R. Ford to Return to Crete After Fire Incident

The US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is expected to return next week to NATO’s naval base in Souda Bay for refueling and a possible investigation into a major onboard fire, according to sources.

Sources say the return to Crete may also involve an investigation into a significant fire that broke out aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford on March 12.

According to reports, the fire began in the ship’s main laundry area and caused widespread disruption onboard. More than 600 sailors lost access to their sleeping quarters and have since been forced to rest on floors and tables.

The aircraft carrier is now entering its 10th month of deployment, significantly exceeding standard operational timelines. Crew members have reportedly been informed that the mission could be extended into May, potentially keeping them at sea for nearly a year — roughly twice the normal deployment length.

One scenario under consideration is that the fire may have been deliberately started by crew members seeking to end the prolonged deployment. While no official confirmation has been provided, the possibility is part of ongoing assessments.

The USS Gerald R. Ford has been deployed in the Middle East amid escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The vessel previously spent four days at Souda Bay in February for resupply operations before continuing its mission in the eastern Mediterranean. Its return highlights both logistical needs and the operational strain of prolonged deployments in a volatile region.
