Britain announced plans to double its deployable Sky Sabre air defense capability with the purchase of six new Land Ceptor systems, in a £118 million ($159 million) deal with European arms manufacturer MBDA. The contract, unveiled by the Ministry of Defence, includes anti-air modular missiles, launchers, and support vehicles capable of intercepting multiple aerial threats simultaneously. The expansion highlights the UK’s response to growing concerns over Europe’s air defense gap, as Western allies prepare potential security guarantees for Ukraine if a peace deal with Russia is reached.

Sky Sabre Expansion

The Land Ceptor systems will integrate into the UK’s Sky Sabre defense network, which can guide 24 missiles to intercept separate targets at once. The system was previously deployed in southeast Poland from 2022 to 2024 to safeguard NATO supply routes to Ukraine and protect Ukrainian recruits in training. Officials noted the missiles are capable of hitting objects as small as a tennis ball traveling at twice the speed of sound. Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard said the move would “strengthen the UK’s air defenses, protect UK forces abroad, and deter our adversaries.”

European And U.S. Security Coordination

The announcement comes as defense chiefs from Europe and the U.S. hold talks on how to guarantee Ukraine’s security in a postwar scenario. The UK and France are leading a “Coalition of the Willing,” offering to station troops and systems outside Ukraine while relying on U.S. intelligence, border surveillance, and potentially advanced air defense deployments. U.S. President Donald Trump, while ruling out ground troop commitments, said Washington was open to providing air defense systems to support Ukraine. “There’s nobody that has the kind of stuff we have,” Trump told Fox News earlier this week.
