Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said the project reflects the company’s commitment to long-term cooperation with Ukraine’s defense sector. The plant, originally designed for smaller-scale production, will undergo major upgrades in machinery, storage, and logistics infrastructure to handle higher output.
The facility will focus on producing 155mm artillery shells compatible with NATO standards, a key requirement for Ukraine’s current military needs. Officials noted that the expansion also aims to create local jobs and enhance technical expertise in the Ukrainian defense workforce.
The plant’s upgrade follows a series of bilateral defense agreements signed between Berlin and Kyiv, emphasizing joint ventures and technology transfers. Rheinmetall has already supplied Ukraine with armored vehicles, air defense systems, and ammunition, becoming one of the country’s top Western defense partners.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov welcomed the move, stating that building local defense capabilities is “a cornerstone of Ukraine’s security and resilience.” The company expects initial production from the upgraded facility to begin in early 2026, with full capacity reached later that year.
