Qatar’s engagement with the United States over the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets has reignited Israeli concerns over its long-standing doctrine of maintaining a “qualitative military edge.” After Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signaled interest in the aircraft, Qatar’s entry into the process has deepened fears in Tel Aviv that Israel’s aerial dominance could be diluted.

Israeli security officials warn that the wider deployment of fifth-generation fighter aircraft across the Middle East could significantly alter the regional balance of air power.

A Compensation Package for Washington

In response, Israel’s defense establishment is preparing a comprehensive compensation package to request from Washington. According to officials familiar with the matter, the proposal would include the formation of two new fighter squadrons for the Israeli Air Force—one equipped with F-35s and the other with advanced F-15IA aircraft.

The package is also expected to cover large quantities of advanced munitions and supporting systems aimed at preserving Israel’s deterrence capabilities.

Racing Against Time

Israeli officials stress that timing is critical. Delays in decision-making could allow U.S. defense manufacturers to prioritize their own production and export schedules, potentially weakening Israel’s negotiating position.

Qatar’s move to pursue F-35s is therefore seen in Israel not merely as another arms deal, but as a strategic development with the potential to reshape military dynamics across the Middle East.
