Kim Says AI-Powered Drones are Now a ‘Top Priority’
Kim Jong Un told officials to make “rapidly developing the newly-introduced artificial intelligence technology” a “top priority” for unmanned weapons.
September 19, 2025Clash Report
North Korea has elevated artificial intelligence for military drones to the very top of its modernization agenda, with Kim Jong Un directing officials to fast-track AI integration and scale up production lines after overseeing fresh performance tests of reconnaissance and attack platforms in the capital.
AI in Drone Expansion
Kim oversaw trials of multipurpose and reconnaissance UAVs, directing officials to accelerate AI technology. His call to “expand and strengthen serial production capacity” signals a shift from prototypes to mass production. State media the same week showcased tactical attack and strategic reconnaissance drones, stressing AI upgrades.
Missiles and Balance of Power
The drone initiative came a week after a “significant” high-thrust solid-fuel engine test for long-range missiles. U.S. military intelligence assessed North Korea is in its strongest position in decades, able to threaten both allies and the U.S. homeland—explaining Pyongyang’s emphasis on deployable solid-fuel missiles and autonomous systems. Meanwhile, a mutual defense pact with Russia deepens ties; a European study valued Pyongyang’s support to Moscow at around $10 billion, though returns appear limited.
The Reality of Military AI
Despite prioritization, true AI capabilities remain uncertain. Independent research shows cross-border work—including links with Chinese institutions—indicating “substantial efforts” to catch up. Still, gaps likely persist between intent and field deployment. Analysts expect continued iterative tests to achieve reliable targeting, navigation, and EW resilience.
