An Israeli airstrike on Sanaa has killed Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled government in Yemen, alongside several other cabinet ministers, officials confirmed. The strike, which targeted a leadership gathering during a routine government workshop, marks a major escalation in the conflict between Israel and the Iran-supported insurgent group. The Houthi leadership has since vowed intensified attacks against Israeli and maritime targets.

The strike struck as senior officials gathered at an apartment or villa in Sanaa to view a prerecorded speech by Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. The operation, characterized by the Israeli military as relying on precision intelligence and air superiority, resulted in multiple casualties, including ministers responsible for foreign affairs, energy, and information. Ahmed al-Rahawi, who assumed office in August 2024 and was seen as a largely symbolic leader, was replaced by his deputy, Mohamed Moftah, following his death.

Israel’s targeting of Houthi leadership rather than infrastructure reflects a heightened approach to neutralize command elements. While al-Rahawi lacked direct military influence, analysts see the strike as an effort to undermine the group’s leadership cohesiveness and deter further strikes against Israeli targets.
