German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Kyiv on June 30 to discuss enhanced support for Ukraine, following one of Russia’s largest aerial assaults involving drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles. The visit signals Berlin’s ongoing backing amid concerns over wavering U.S. commitment.
“We will continue to stand firmly by Ukraine’s side so that it can continue to defend itself successfully — with modern air defence and other weapons, with humanitarian and economic aid,” Wadephul said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy made urgent appeals to Washington and other Western allies for improved air defense capabilities following the multi-pronged Russian attack on June 29, which targeted multiple Ukrainian cities and reportedly caused casualties and destruction.
Germany, already Ukraine’s second-largest military backer after the United States, is expected to play a growing role in filling any potential gaps left by transatlantic hesitation.
Wadephul’s visit comes amid growing unease in Europe regarding Washington’s shifting stance on aid to Ukraine. With the U.S. role increasingly scrutinized, particularly during an election year, Germany is stepping up diplomatic visibility and military deliveries.
The German foreign ministry emphasized the importance of long-term coordination, particularly in areas such as air defense infrastructure and post-conflict economic recovery.
