Hamas released what it called a “farewell picture” showing 48 captives as Israeli forces pressed deeper into Gaza City, a move the group said puts detainees at further risk. The image—each face labeled “Ron Arad,” after the Israeli airman who disappeared in Lebanon in 1986—appeared alongside a message blaming Israeli political and military leaders for rejecting a deal, as heavy bombardment and ground thrusts continued across the enclave’s largest urban center.
The compilation photo carried a caption: “Because of Netanyahu’s refusal, and Zamir’s capitulation, a farewell picture as the military operation in Gaza City begins.” The post invoked Ron Arad to suggest uncertainty over the captives’ fate and reiterated that intensified operations threaten detainees “scattered throughout the neighborhoods” of Gaza City. Israeli authorities have lately assessed around 50 captives remain in Gaza, about 20 alive, while public debate sharpened after the army chief reportedly said a deal was “on the table.”
Israeli armor and infantry pushed into additional districts after new evacuation orders, with leaflets and messages urging civilians to flee via limited corridors amid “unprecedented” fire. Health officials in Gaza report the death toll has surpassed 65,000 since October 2023, and humanitarian agencies warn hospitals are “on the brink” as fuel, supplies and staff run short. The army has signaled heavier strikes ahead, and aid groups say civilians unable to leave face mounting peril in areas declared combat zones.
Families of captives and their supporters planned fresh nationwide rallies this evening, demanding an immediate comprehensive agreement to bring everyone home and end the war. Recent weeks have seen large demonstrations in Tel Aviv and other cities, with organizers urging leaders to accept a deal after months of stalemate. Protesters argue ongoing assaults endanger captives; officials counter that pressure on Hamas is necessary to secure releases and dismantle its forces.
