Israel will deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to South Sudan to help the country confront a worsening cholera outbreak, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirmed during a meeting in Jerusalem with his South Sudanese counterpart Semaya Kumba. The aid package will include medical supplies, hygiene kits, face masks, gloves, food aid, and water purification systems. The initiative, coordinated by Mashav, Israel’s national aid agency, in partnership with the Israeli NGO IsraAid, aims to alleviate severe shortages and support South Sudan’s strained health system. Officials highlighted that the humanitarian crisis has been further exacerbated by the arrival of refugees fleeing ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the emergency shipment will provide critical medical and logistical resources. Water purification systems are intended to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases, while hygiene kits and protective equipment such as gloves and masks will help reduce transmission. Food packages are also included to support vulnerable communities facing shortages as South Sudan confronts both the outbreak and wider humanitarian challenges.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar emphasized Israel’s commitment to assisting its partners during times of crisis, stating, “Israel stands by its friends in their difficult times.” South Sudanese Foreign Minister Semaya Kumba welcomed the aid, noting that the assistance would directly support communities under pressure from both the outbreak and the influx of displaced families from Sudan. The collaboration highlights Israel’s broader use of humanitarian aid as a tool of diplomacy in Africa, while addressing urgent health needs in one of the world’s most fragile states.
