Two Milwaukee, located in the United States, Wisconsin, police officers were shot in an ambush while investigating a weapon-related call in the city's northwest on Thursday night. The attack occurred in an alley around 9:20 p.m. when the officers were unexpectedly fired upon by a suspect who remains at large.
One of the officers, a 32-year-old man with over six years of service, was critically wounded and is receiving treatment at a local hospital. The second officer, a 29-year-old man with similar service, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
The officers were responding to a call regarding a suspect armed with a weapon, which escalated to a shots-fired incident while they were en route. Assistant Police Chief Nicole Waldner confirmed that the suspect is known to the police, but their identity has not yet been released.
This incident follows a recent trend of heightened violence in Milwaukee, which has seen an uptick in violent crimes, including carjackings. The Milwaukee Police Association condemned the attack, expressing concern over the increasing danger to officers in the city.
"The violence in our city is out of control, and those who protect our neighborhoods are increasingly in the crosshairs," the MPA stated, noting that five officers have been killed in the line of duty over the past seven years.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson vowed that the responsible individual would be brought to justice, calling it "a sad day" for the city. He added, "No officer, no person in law enforcement should ever, ever be fired upon."
