According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, discussions will evaluate the progress made in Türkiye-Syria relations since diplomatic normalization began eight months ago. Fidan and Sharaa are expected to review collaborative mechanisms in areas such as intelligence-sharing, border patrol coordination, and humanitarian support to accelerate Syria’s recovery process.
Security topics will include Türkiye’s ongoing concerns about PKK/YPG presence in northeastern Syria and Daesh’s operational remnants. Turkish sources stressed that counterterrorism cooperation remains central to Ankara’s Syria strategy, particularly in securing refugee return routes and curbing cross-border insurgent activity.
Efforts to institutionalize relations have gained traction, with Ankara highlighting opportunities for broader cooperation that align with both countries’ security and development interests.
The meeting will also include discussions on Israel’s military actions and rhetoric in the region, which Ankara and Damascus view as destabilizing. The Turkish side emphasized the urgency of reinforcing Syria’s sovereignty and regional balance in the face of external threats.
This visit builds on a series of reciprocal high-level contacts, including previous trips by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and President Sharaa to Türkiye. Turkish officials say the current period offers momentum for deepening cooperation and establishing long-term regional stability.
