US Navy Swaps Aircraft Carriers Amid Reports of Plummeting Morale
The Pentagon is deploying the USS George Washington to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln. The carrier swap follows alarming reports of plummeting morale, supply shortages, and severe exhaustion among sailors deployed continuously for the ongoing Iran conflict.

The Pentagon will deploy the USS George Washington to the Middle East to relieve an embattled aircraft carrier crew facing severe operational fatigue and deteriorating living conditions.
Defense officials confirmed the impending rotation of the USS Abraham Lincoln, a vessel anchored in the region to project American force during the ongoing war with Iran.
The strike group has operated without a single port call for 244 consecutive days.
The unprecedented continuous deployment has raised serious concerns within the top echelons of the U.S. military about combat readiness and psychological strain.
Operational Attrition
Approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the Lincoln have not stepped off the ship since a December port visit in Guam.
The carrier was diverted directly to the Middle East following a prior assignment in the Indo-Pacific.
A lack of port access has severed the crew from fresh food supplies and standard liberty periods.
Extended maritime operations without replenishment cycles have subsequently triggered alarm among defense planners.
Internal Pentagon assessments indicate multiple "man overboard" incidents aboard the Lincoln in recent weeks.
Military leadership even deployed a therapy dog to the carrier in a modest attempt to address plummeting crew morale.
"The Navy is clearly stretched," noted retired Army Col. Steve Warren, a military analyst. "Multiple deployments over extended periods of time come with a cost."
‘Err on the Side of Caution’
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine has privately cautioned the White House and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the strategic risks of prolonged regional deployments.
Negotiations to halt the seven-month-long conflict remain entirely stalled.
Despite these operational warnings, the executive branch maintains its current force posture.
President Donald Trump recently defended maintaining elevated troop levels in the theater, saying it was to "err on the side of caution."
The strain extends well beyond a single vessel. U.S. Central Command currently oversees more than 50,000 troops in the region, a substantial increase from pre-war baselines of 30,000 to 40,000 personnel.
A parallel deployment involves the USS George H.W. Bush, which arrived five months ago to replace another carrier that spent 326 days at sea.
Backlash from Democrats
Mounting grievances from military families recently confronted Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao during a heated town hall in San Diego.
Relatives described significant shortages of essential amenities aboard the Lincoln.
The crisis has triggered formal congressional scrutiny.
Democratic lawmakers are demanding an immediate accounting of the vessel's condition and broader naval sustainability.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal demanded answers from the Pentagon regarding “widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns, and disruptions in the mail system."
Furthermore, combat casualties across the theater continue to mount.
Recent defense data confirms nearly 700 service members have suffered injuries, including traumatic brain injuries from regional airstrikes, alongside 18 personnel killed in action.
The imminent carrier swap will require several weeks of overlapping regional operations before the USS George Washington assumes full command.
The Lincoln will then undertake a minimum two-week transit to its California homeport.
