China has declared its willingness to take the lead in signing the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty, signalling firm support for regional denuclearisation.

“We stand ready to stay in communication with ASEAN countries on this matter,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during a regular press briefing.

Treaty Gains Momentum Among Major Powers

The SEANWFZ Treaty, established in 1995, aims to prohibit nuclear weapons in Southeast Asia. While ASEAN member states are already parties to the treaty, efforts to gain endorsement from nuclear-armed states have continued for years.

According to Malaysian state media, both China and Russia have agreed to become signatories. The United States is reportedly reviewing the treaty before making its decision.

China’s willingness to lead the process could increase momentum among other nuclear-armed powers to engage with the treaty and reinforce non-proliferation norms in the region.
