The Israeli military launched airstrikes on Houthi-held ports and energy infrastructure in Yemen late Sunday, prompting the Iran-backed rebel group to fire more missiles toward Israeli territory in a fresh flare-up of regional hostilities.
According to the Israeli military, the strikes hit:
The ports of Hodeidah, Ras-Isa, and as-Salif, The Ras Kathib power station,
And a radar system mounted on the Galaxy Leader, a ship seized by the Houthis in 2023.
These were the first Israeli strikes on Yemen in nearly a month and followed the interception of a missile fired at Israel earlier in the day.
In retaliation, the Houthis launched at least two missiles toward Israel on Monday morning, triggering sirens in Jerusalem, Hebron, and near the Dead Sea. Israel said it attempted to intercept the projectiles, and no casualties or direct hits were reported.
The Houthis claimed their air defenses forced Israeli jets to retreat, using locally made surface-to-air missiles. The group stated its forces were prepared to strike deeper into Israeli territory if attacks continued.
The attacks also come amid renewed threats to Red Sea shipping. On Sunday, a cargo vessel was set on fire following a drone and grenade attack believed to match previous Houthi patterns. The crew was forced to abandon the ship.
Since the Gaza war began, the Houthis have launched over 100 attacks on commercial vessels and hundreds of missiles toward Israel, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The strikes took place during a critical juncture in Gaza ceasefire negotiations and as Tehran considers resuming nuclear talks. Houthi attacks had previously paused following a January truce between Hamas and Israel but resumed after the U.S. bombed Yemen in March, killing nearly 300 people.
Israeli forces also escalated operations in Lebanon, striking Hezbollah-linked targets in southern and eastern regions. Military officials said they targeted rocket launch sites and facilities allegedly used for storing strategic weapons.
