Israel has warned that it will block the Global Sumud Flotilla from breaching its naval blockade of Gaza, setting the stage for a potential confrontation at sea. Organizers of the convoy, which includes more than 40 vessels carrying aid workers and activists, say they aim to deliver humanitarian supplies and break the siege.
On 22 September, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it would not allow the flotilla to enter what it designates a “combat zone,” urging ships to dock at Ashkelon instead for aid transfer. Officials accused the mission of being orchestrated to advance Hamas’s agenda rather than purely humanitarian goals.
The flotilla coalition released a video showing the vessel Sirius, five days from a “high-risk zone” and seven days from Gaza. Organizers added that over 40 boats are converging in international waters as part of the campaign, describing it as the largest coordinated maritime action in years.
Earlier this month, a flotilla boat flagged by Portugal was struck by a drone while in Tunisian waters. The attack caused deck and below-deck damage but no casualties. The incident underscored the physical risks participants face as they sail closer to contested waters.
Israel insists the flotilla is political, not humanitarian, while organizers argue it is an international civil society effort to enforce the right to deliver aid under international law. Observers note the voyage carries both symbolic and practical weight, drawing attention to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis while challenging the legitimacy of the blockade.
By 22 September, vessels from different countries—including Greece—were joining the convoy in international waters. Organizers acknowledged internal tensions over safety protocols and strategy. Analysts warn of possible naval clashes, detentions, or ship seizures if Israel moves to enforce its blockade.
