The Israeli government is reviewing Hamas’s “positive response” and proposed amendments to a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza, with sources confirming a cabinet meeting will take place Saturday evening to discuss the next steps.
Hamas confirmed it had submitted its official reply to international mediators, describing it as a constructive step forward. The movement expressed “serious readiness” to engage in immediate talks to implement the truce mechanism “in a way that achieves the aspirations of the Palestinian people and puts an end to the ongoing attacks on Gaza”.
The response included amendments, though the exact nature of those changes has not been publicly detailed. Sources cited by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority said the revisions “will pose a challenge” for Israeli decision-makers.
The original U.S.-Qatari-Egyptian proposal involves a 60-day cessation of hostilities, staggered exchanges of hostages and prisoners, and partial Israeli military withdrawals from Gaza. Hamas, however, is reportedly demanding a full withdrawal, particularly from the southern Gaza region and the Morag axis—conditions Israel is reluctant to meet.
Israel Hayom reported that the troop withdrawal issue remains the primary hurdle. Nevertheless, Israel is expected to dispatch a delegation to continue talks with mediators following cabinet discussions.
The ceasefire talks come in the aftermath of a 12-day war between Israel and Iran, which elevated international urgency for a resolution in Gaza. The United States, under President Donald Trump, has been pressuring both sides to finalize the agreement before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to Washington.
Trump has warned Hamas that the deal represents its best opportunity and has said that "it will not get better—IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE" if they stall.
