North Korea showcased its newly developed Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile during a grand military parade in Pyongyang, describing it as the “most powerful strategic weapon” ever built by the state. The display marked a significant show of strength on the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party, featuring a new generation of solid-fuel engines designed for rapid, road-mobile nuclear strikes.
The parade presentation focused on the Hwasong-20’s reported solid-fuel propulsion system, said to deliver nearly two meganewtons of thrust. Engineers claimed it uses carbon-fibre composite casing and enhanced burn efficiency, reducing launch preparation time to minutes. Defence observers view this as a strategic leap toward a survivable nuclear deterrent. Yet, no independent verification exists, and the missile has not undergone a full-range test since development trials earlier this year.
Pyongyang framed the parade as proof of its “self-reliant nuclear strength” and commitment to “global justice.” Standing alongside Kim Jong Un on the reviewing stand was Russian Security Council deputy chair Dmitry Medvedev, who praised bilateral solidarity and condemned Western sanctions. The presence of Russian and Chinese envoys underscored North Korea’s effort to deepen alignment with Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and strained ties with Washington.
Experts believe the Hwasong-20 could be capable of carrying multiple re-entry vehicles to bypass missile defences, though many doubt the country’s mastery of advanced guidance and thermal-shielding systems. “It’s a parade missile for now, not a proven deterrent,” one regional analyst noted. The unveiling nevertheless signals a determination to sustain weapons testing and bolster diplomatic leverage ahead of potential future negotiations with the United States.
